Healthy Skin Starts With the Basics: A Doctor’s Guide to Your Daily Skin Routine

Beautiful, healthy-looking skin doesn’t need an overflowing bathroom

cabinet. In fact, one of the most common mistakes I see is doing too much.

Good skin health starts with consistency: protecting your skin, supporting your skin barrier and looking after your overall health. Here are the fundamentals I recommend.

Morning: Protect

Cleanse gently

Use a cleanser suitable for your skin type. Avoid harsh soaps, aggressive scrubbing and very hot water.

Add an antioxidant

A vitamin C or other antioxidant serum can be useful for many skin types, helping to support brighter, more even-looking skin.

Moisturise

Choose a moisturiser appropriate for your skin. Ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid can help support hydration and the skin barrier.

Always use SPF

A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above is one of the most important steps in any anti-ageing skin routine. UV exposure contributes to pigmentation, premature skin ageing and skin cancer risk.

Evening: Repair & Restore

Your evening routine can be equally simple:

Cleanse → targeted active ingredient → moisturise.

Remove makeup and sunscreen thoroughly but gently.

Depending on your skin, targeted ingredients such as retinoids, niacinamide or exfoliating acids may be beneficial. However, introducing too many active ingredients at once can result in irritation rather than better skin.

Your routine should be appropriate for your skin, not somebody else’s routine on social media.

Healthy Skin Is Also an Inside Job

What you put on your skin is only part of the picture.

Hydration: Drink enough to remain adequately hydrated, but don't expect excessive water intake to erase wrinkles.

Nutrition: Aim for a varied, balanced diet containing colourful vegetables and fruit, adequate protein and healthy fats. Your skin needs nutrients—not fashionable “detoxes.”

Exercise: Regular movement supports your general health and wellbeing. After heavy sweating, gently cleanse your skin, particularly if you've been wearing makeup or sunscreen.

Sleep & stress: Good-quality sleep and managing chronic stress are also important parts of looking after your overall health.

Skin Care: The Do’s and Don’ts

DO keep your routine simple, wear SPF daily, moisturise, introduce active ingredients gradually, eat well, exercise and give your skin time to respond.

DON’T aggressively scrub your skin, constantly change products, combine multiple strong active ingredients without understanding them, pick spots, sleep in makeup or assume expensive products automatically produce better results.

And remember: more skin care does not necessarily mean better skin.

When Skin Care Alone Isn’t Enough

A good home routine is the foundation, but creams and serums have their limitations.

If concerns such as fine lines, skin texture, loss of firmness, post-acne scarring or changes associated with skin ageing are bothering you, professionally delivered skin rejuvenation treatments may sometimes complement your home skin care.

At Dr Vineeta Aesthetics in Burnaston, Derbyshire, I take a personalised, doctor-led approach to skin rejuvenation. Depending on your skin and goals, options may include Tixel® 2, RF microneedling, skin boosters, PRP skin rejuvenation and PUREHYDRO facials.
